Digital dowloads delivered! (And other updates)

Hi backers!
Happy new year (if it is still acceptable to wish it in February).
As mentioned in our last update we will be sending out the digital rewards – Please check your inbox as you should be getting them as we speak!
As a reminder: the digital rewards will include:
- The digital comic (in PDF format)
- The digital companion book (in PDF format)
- The digital behind the scenes book (PDF)
- A set of two digital backgrounds
- A link to a spotify playlist curated by Murenga’s writer
(Disclaimer, the rewards you receive will be based on the tier you backed)
That being said, we will be changing gears to focus on the physical item production. This means that we will shortly (date to be determined) be locking addresses. If you would like to change your delivery address you can do so on your survey.

IMPORTANT: if you are planning to move or are in the process of moving and you don’t have a new address yet- please let us know, we unfortunately do not have the resources to send out re-orders after the dispatch date and we want everyone to receive their rewards.

It has been a while - but we finally have news!

Dear Backers, and Kugali Family,
It sucks to begin with an apology, but we owe you one. It has been a while without an update on fulfilment – our bad. We’ve been hard at work trying to get all our ducks in a row with this project for a while, but can finally actually give you some news. There isn't much of an excuse for such an enormous delay without any kind of real update, but here is at least a reason.
We won’t spend long on this, but as we were trying to finalise our charity options for the campaign, we ended up losing a few crucial team members who we had relied upon porbably too much, for a very long time. This included our head of ops, who had managed every campaign prior to this one and was in charge of every aspect of Murenga's fulfilment (and a huge reason for our success in fulfilling previous campaigns). When they weren't here anymore, we were underprepared to take on the extra load and couldn't fill their frankly enormous shoes. Things simply fell apart, and we had to start in a few ways from scratch. We’ve changed supplier because of test copies not being where we wanted them to be out of necessity, and have started working with our publishing contacts to ensure that the charity books get where they need to go! We were hoping to get ahead of the Christmas last-post, but didn’t manage to in the end and will, sadly, not be shipping until after the holidays. We know this is disappointing, but there is better news on the horizon...
We can now fully commit to a shipment date: fulfilment will officially begin in late January, with books and physical reward tiers arriving with backers between early March and April. This even includes the charity books! It’s been a long and arduous road, and we’ve learned a *lot* about the many ways in which things can go wrong (almost entirely outside of our control, but it is nonetheless we who take the blame), but we’re coming through with what we hope will be absolutely worth the wait.
Digital rewards - i.e. the finished comic - will be provided imminently. Stay tuned to your inboxes to be the first to get your eyes on Murenga!

Mid-year update!

Happy Pride month backers!
This month have a few updates for you all, some great and some less good- so let’s jump straight in:
Firstly, following up on our last update the samples have been trickling in at Kugali here are few of the samples we’ve received in the last month :
Bookmark
We’re extremely happy with how the bookmark turned out so this is as close to the final version as we’ll get. We chose to go for a red foiling on one side of the bookmark to highlight the Mutumai root and the flowers.
Art print
We’re making a few tiny adjustments to the Art print so we can have the foiling be seamlessly integrated with the artwork – The photo isn’t doing it justice, but we chose a holographic foil for the moons, insects and lines on the rocks.
Now, there’s something nice for you at the end, but first, we have some sad news. Unfortunately, despite all our efforts, we’ve had to make a tough choice to delay the fulfilment of Murenga from September until early next year – likely the first half of February. The reason for this delay is down to the donation tier books – for those unaware, one of the tiers of reward involved us donating a copy of Murenga to a school, library or other organisation somewhere on the African continent in order to promote awareness of LGBT+ people, issues and allyship. We knew this would be a challenge, but was something we were passionate about including – sadly a lot of places on the continent have incredibly strict laws about the kinds of books we can bring in, and ultimately it means that we need to find a distributor or organisation that can help us get these books into the right places without endangering anyone, or without compromising on the goal.
“Why can’t you just fulfil our books?” you may ask – well, we could... But if we did that, none of you would have a reason to check that we’d done our due diligence when it came to the donation tier. We want to hold ourselves accountable to this goal – it is, after all, part of the core mission of our company to promote African storytelling within Africa - and we don’t feel the donated books should come second to the shipped out tiers. We hope that you understand.
In happier news, the creative team has finished working on the Companion book which is an extension of the world of Murenga and its characters and we are now working on the “Making of Murenga”. This will give you an exclusive insight into the creative process, and be part of a few inside jokes 😉 Fancy a sneak peek?

Hi backers- it’s been a minute!
We’ve been holding off on an update so we could share plenty of good news all in one go.
- The comic is FINISHED! All the pages are coloured and lettered, and we are now working closely with our printers to produce the best physical book we can. Our operations team is very picky about how they want the book to look and feel.
Here's a first look at the Variant cover design.
- Some of the merch samples have arrived- Enjoy a first look at the sticker, enamel pin and tote bag.
~ Mvuu sticker~
Some minor changes will be done to the sticker such as reducing the white border around Mvuu
~ Mutimai enamel pin~
We’re very happy with this and aside from some minor touch-ups, this is what the final product will look like.
~Tote bag~
The tote bag is still a work in progress- that is why we always get a sample- We realised that the size of the bag was a bit small for our taste and that the bag was a lot more whitewashed than we anticipated- this essentially gives the look of a much lighter skin tone, so we’ll be sure to add more colour for the next sample.
We’re still awaiting the samples of the foiled bookmark and the foiled art print and we’ll share photos once they arrive!
